Our Work:

Keeping Families Housed and Kids in School

At Amparo, we believe no child should lose their home. We work hand in hand with schools, landlords, and community partners to step in quickly when a family is at risk of eviction. By providing rental assistance and connecting families with long-term resources, we keep children in their classrooms and families in their homes.

Because Amparo is privately funded and built on trusted partnerships, we can act fast—preventing homelessness before it happens. This means families experience stability sooner, children stay focused on school, and our community grows stronger together.

Testimonials

"THANK YOU FOR EVERYTHING!"

"As you know, Amparo helped put a family up in a hotel today. The dad and I met with the Coalition to End Homelessness today and since I was able to show them the check for the hotel this father officially qualifies for being homeless. The Coalition was able to submit an application for Rapid Rehousing with CLN this afternoon. With everyone's help and support he is now as of today, starting to save up money to clear his eviction, will be assigned a housing case manager through CLN rapid rehousing, and has two full weeks of steady living where he does not need to move out night after night."

"SAFETY AND STABILITY NOW"

"One mother of a student pregnant with twins recently reached out to the Community School Coordinator because she was homeless and fleeing a domestic violence situation in another state. Through Amparo, we were able to obtain a hotel placement long enough for her to enter a domestic violence shelter who also partners with ABC Community School Partnership. Throughout this process, we also utilized a relationship with NM Coalition to End Homelessness and Hope Works to get her rapid rehousing application, and now she is moving into an apartment with support. This family has safety and stability now and can focus on healing from past trauma."

"A student was essentially abandoned at the school. The nearest relative APD could find happened to be grandma and she was living in her car. This family was referred to the Community School Coordinator for help with Caregiver Affidavit and referral for Kinship/Guardianship, but that was just the first step in a long and arduous process of helping this family obtain stability through housing. As part of our Community School Partnerships, they began working with First Nations case management, receiving counseling services as well as referrals to the Women's Coalition and Healthcare for the Homeless. Amparo helped with placement in a hotel until the family was finally housed. The impact of working on the housing was much greater than just having a place to live. The grandma joined our Family Engagement Project at the school, and she began to heal years of trauma from loss and addiction. She was able to not only obtain guardianship of her granddaughter, but also provide a safe place for her disabled brother. Housing is a basic building block in the foundation of family units. The impact of having safe affordable housing extends to individuals finally having the safety and stability to build capacity in other important areas of their lives."

"THEY WOULD HAVE BECOME HOMELESS"

"We were able to utilize Amparo for a family that allowed them to maintain their Section 8 Voucher. Section 8 Vouchers are very important for vulnerable families, they can take years to acquire and they nearly cover the full cost of rent. If it wasn't for Amparo, this family would have become immediately homeless upon eviction. They would have not only lost their voucher, but also their rental home which was comfortably located within their children's school boundaries. And proximity was a critical aspect of this case because all of the children in the household had special needs which were serviced at their local attendance area schools."

"FAMILIES STAYED STABLE"

"Several of the families that we have supported through Amparo and other resources, I can happily say, stayed stable for at least the remainder of the school years in which we were working with them. Unfortunately until we have a better housing and income equitable system we can not declare anyone stable. I am proud to be a community school coordinator with ABC Community School Partnership because the commitment to create better economic systems for families will ultimately put us on the road to achieve 'stability'."

"I KNOW MY FAMILY WILL BE OK"

"My family and I are staying [in a hotel]. My family and I became homeless. And when I was referred to the Amparo program and found out they could help us we finally felt relieved. But they don't just help with a place to stay for temporary. They are helping me with getting back on my feet. From housing to day care. My case worker from Title I has been amazing. We are finally getting the help my family needed. And took our case serious. We want to thank you all so much. Because of the help we are receiving I know my family and I are going to be okay"

"WE SAVED A FAMILY FROM GOING TO COURT"

"Thank you so much, we saved a family from going to court and she was able to pay off her payday loans with minimal interest. Now she is all caught up and plans to be self sufficient."

"WE GREATLY APPRECIATE THIS"

"Thank you so much again. This is such a big relief for us and is giving us a chance to gather our checks for next month's rent and utilities. We greatly appreciate this, my family and I, thank you so much."

"WE WILL BE FOREVER GRATEFUL"

"My family and I want to thank you and amparo for everything y'all have done to make it possible for us to move into a new home that is safe and secure. We would not of been able to do it with out amparos generosity. It means so much to our family. We will be forever grateful. We were very afraid that we were going to end up homeless and amparo gave us the piece of mind that we wouldn't be. We can not thank you enough."
