About Amparo

Amparo means “shelter.” We support families of school-age children in Bernalillo County who are facing eviction and homelessness.
Our board members, many of whom work directly with families, noticed a gap: even when housing assistance exists, it often comes too late to prevent eviction.

One differentiator is Amparo can move fast since it is privately funded and the partners pre-screen candidates, so Amparo is more effective at preventing families with children from becoming homeless or unhoused

The eviction process moves fast. Traditional funding doesn’t. Amparo was created to fill that gap. With seed funding from the Robert T. Keeler Foundation, we launched a flexible, rapid-response fund for families with school-age children on the verge of losing housing. Once a crisis is stabilized, we work to get reimbursed through existing but slower-moving funding sources. All rent assistance requests are submitted to Amparo by trusted partners—community school coordinators in the ABC Community School Partnership or social workers with the APS Title I McKinney-Vento Program. All cases are housing emergencies, and families must be actively working toward a longer-term housing solution. We’ve had many positive outcomes — but demand has far exceeded what we imagined. We fund as many requests as possible and are continually fundraising to keep up. Thank you to our donors and partners for helping us keep families housed and kids in school.
